"The circle is the symbol of the perfect man, and seven is the number of the perfect man; The Logos is the perfect word; that which creates; that which destroys, and that which saves."
Islam. Before we get into our meaning of what Moorish Science is, let us start off with a few general definitions. A Moor is someone who is genetically and ethnically descendants of the progenitors of all humanity. The dark skinned woolly haired people of the planet who range from dark brown olive tone hue, to a light tan olive tone hue, possessing all of the phenotype and characteristic of the people falsely called "black" people on this earth today. The suffix -ish etymologically defines:
adjectival suffix, from Old English -isc, common Germanic (cf. Old Norse -iskr, German -isch, Gothic -isks), cognate with Greek diminutive suffix -iskos. Colloquially attached to hours to denote approximation, 1916. (taken from the online etymological dictionary)
Notice that it says "Colloquially attached to hours to denote approximation". Colloquial simply denotes slang and they give the date for its usage starting from 1916.
To understand the suffix -ish and what it means, now that we know and understand that the original meaning of -ish does not mean "something like" or "approximation", we have to look at the general meaning of the word.
1: of, relating to, or being —chiefly in adjectives indicating nationality or ethnic group <Finnish>
2 a : characteristic of <boyish> <Pollyannaish>
b : inclined or liable to <bookish> <qualmish>
3 a : having a touch or trace of <purplish> : somewhat <darkish>
b : having the approximate age of <fortyish> (taken from Merriam Webster online dictionary)
Notice that the very first word gives you the actual intended meaning of the suffix -ish and that is relating or belong to and is used chiefly in identifying nationality or ethnic groups and they give the example of "Finnish." We are Moorish and so now we understand the general applied meaning of the suffix as it relates to the Moors and why it is connected to the name Moor.
Now, let us look at the etymology of Science:
c.1300, "knowledge (of something) acquired by study," also "a particular branch of knowledge," from O.Fr. science, from L. scientia "knowledge," from sciens (gen. scientis), prp. of scire "to know," probably originally "to separate one thing from another, to distinguish," related to scindere "to cut, divide," from PIE root *skei- (cf. Gk. skhizein "to split, rend, cleave," Goth. skaidan, O.E. sceadan "to divide, separate;" see shed (v.)).
Here is the general definition of Science:
1: the state of knowing : knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding
2 a : a department of systematized knowledge as an object of study <the science of theology>
b : something (as a sport or technique) that may be studied or learned like systematized knowledge <have it down to a science>
3 a : knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method
b : such knowledge or such a system of knowledge concerned with the physical world and its phenomena : natural science
4 : a system or method reconciling practical ends with scientific laws <cooking is both a science and an art>
5 capitalized : CHRISTIAN SCIENCE (taken from Merriam Webster online dictionary)
To sum it up, science simply means to know. So Moorish Science, just based on the general definitions given above, means the study of yourself. Our questionnaire relays "16. How did the Prophet begin to uplift the Moorish Americans? By teaching them to be themselves." In our doctrine at Ch. 3 vv. 14-15 it relays this message clearly:
"If you would ask me what to study, I would say, yourselves; and when you well have studied them; and then would ask me what to study next, I would reply, yourselves. He who knows well his lower self, knows the illusions of the world, knows of the things that pass away; and he who knows his higher self, know Allah; knows well the things that cannot pass away."
This is Moorish Science in a nutshell, it is the studying and the mastering of the self. When man has mastered himself, he becomes the living logos represented by the circle and the 7 and that is what Prophet Noble Drew Ali is to us, the living logos and he came bearing the mandalas of two parts, thus proving that he is the 5th Buddha that would return to bring the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead at the end of time. To see more on this prophecy
Some old Moors and others who come from other "Moor" type groups, assert the obstinate notion that Noble Drew Ali never used the phrase "Moorish Science." This is so strange coming from those who have eyes to see that the very name of the movement is called the MOORISH SCIENCE TEMPLE OF AMERICA and that the name of our Holy Book is called THE HOLY KORAN OF THE MOORISH SCIENCE TEMPLE OF AMERICA. As our doctrine teaches, men need a pattern after their lives, they love to follow and not lead. Some have to have their hands held every step of the way and dare not tread beyond their own interpretations.
In Freemasonry, it is the mandate of that organization to "make men better men." In Moorish Science, it is our duty to "uplift fallen humanity." In the Freemasonic folds, it is key to keep the science that can save men a secret unto themselves. In Moorish Science however, it is the obligation of every Moslem to reveal the science that can save men even to the most profane of individuals. Prophet Noble Drew Ali was quoted as saying "I took the cover off all the secret organizations." We find this displayed at chapter 5 of our Moorish doctrine:
11. And then he went forth with his parents on their way to Nazareth; and when they reached their home He wrought with Joseph as a carpenter.
12. One day as He was bringing forth the tools for work he said:
13. "These tools remind me of the ones we handle in the workshop of the mind where things were made of thought and where we build up character.
14. We use the square to measure all our lines, to straighten out the crooked places of the way, and make the corners of our conduct square.
15. We use the compass to draw circles around our passions and desires to keep them in the bounds of righteousness.
16. We use the axe to cut away the knotty, useless and ungainly parts and make the character symmetrical.
17. We use the hammer to drive home the truth, and pound it in until it is a part of every part.
18. We use the plane to smooth the rough, uneven surfaces of joint, and block, and board that go to build the temple for the truth.
19. The chisel, line, the plummet and the saw all have their uses in the workshop of the mind.
20. And then this ladder with its trinity of steps, faith, hope and love; on it we climb up to the dome of purity in life.
21. And on the twelve step ladder, we ascend until we reach the pinnacle of that which life is spent to build the Temple of Perfected Man."
So we see that the tools of Freemasonic thought and their meaning held hidden by that organization, is given freely to the sons of man so that they can build themselves up. The Holy Koran of the Moorish Science Temple is comprised of several sources taught by secret organizations and the Prophet, fearlessly took them and returned them back into our hands because this is the science that Moors dispersed unto all of mankind in ancient times and it was not until the Prophet Noble Drew Ali came to find us, the lost tribe of Moab, that these lessons were returned us. For this reason, many slanderers and fleecers have made the claim that somehow, Prophet Noble Drew Ali was trying to push a Masonic secret agenda but anyone, even with the sense of an invalid, will see for themselves that this is not truth.
You will find Moorish Science in every ancient system of history being used in the building of edifices of wonderful design. Egyptian mysteries, Kaballah, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, Celts, Druids, etc., have all employed the ancient mathematical treaties of Moorish Science and this science has left an indelible impression upon the world. You see, once man truly understands himself, his composition of mind body and soul, there is nothing that he cannot build or create.
So Moorish Science is the study of your self. The study of your Higher Self and your Lower Self. It is not anything complicated or deep about what Moorish Science is. Moorish Science teaches you to be your higher self and live by the five greatest principles known to man; LOVE, TRUTH, PEACE, FREEDOM & JUSTICE. When man has rendered naught his/her lower self and becomes his/her Higher Self, then he/she becomes representative of the Logos Circle Seven.
